Visit the city of cheese – Alkmaar! In a country where the average person eats about 19 kilos per year, the cheese market in Alkmaar has become world famous. You can experience the traditional market every Friday from the end of March till the end of September. It starts at 09:00 and ends around 13:00 hours. Should you happen to be there when there is no cheese market, you could visit the charming historic city centre with its great shops, take rest on one of the many welcoming terraces, cafes and restaurants for every budget. If culture is your thing, the city has a number of interesting museums and when you have had enough of that, why don’t you head for the beautiful beaches located a short drive away.

Famous attractions

Alkmaar is famous for its Cheese Market which takes place on the main square during the tourist season. Another kind of trade you find just outside Alkmaar at the Broekerveiling. In this museum you can experience how vegetables and other produce are brought to the auction hall in boats and sold off.
